The Story:

A little over two weeks ago I received an email about an opportunity to display some artwork in a large, empty, newly re-built house in Bethesda, MD. I met with the real-estate agent who is the wife of one of my old high-school teachers from the Washington International School and she let me into the house. I was immediately inspired and excited about taking on the project as it fit perfectly with my mandate to take art out of the gallery and into less intimidating spaces. I took some photos and drove home to brainstorm…

I have been concerned with the idea of increasing the accessibility of art. Other important factors include determining the function and re-useability of the objects. In the past I have focused on sculptures, often using units in repetition to create them. These sculptures, though intriguing, had a low “shelf-life” due to the fact that they only existed as art when on display…when they weren’t on display they ceased being art and reverted to the objects and materials they were made from-which in short means objects in storage and later objects in the dump.

In times100, the main body of work is comprised of one-hundred 8″x8″ handmade wall panels which attempt to increase the functionality of the art piece by becoming visually stimulating objects that a viewer can easily identify with and can visualize owning, all while in the relatively neutral context of an empty home. They are designed to sell in order to become objects in peoples lives rather than obscure objects that serve little function.

Photos of the opening will follow next week.

Hope to see you at the opening on Friday, Oct. 17th, 2008!
