Original announcement and invite:
Announcing “Empty Nest”, a solo show of kinetic sculptures and more by Edmond van der Bijl, opening March 13th at The Affinity Lab:

Empty Nest:
It takes 41 days to create an empty nest. Though in reality this is not the case, having the specific timeframe of 41 days was one of the challenges faced while creating “Empty Nest”, a solo show of kinetic sculptures and more by Edmond van der Bijl opening on March 13th 2009 at The Affinity Lab in Washington DC’s historic Adams Morgan.
“Empty Nest” focuses on a series of suspended kinetic sculptures that are handmade from plastic cable ties and replicate organic forms found in nature. The use of plastic ties contradicts nature and yet imitates the basic building blocks of life-cells-which are used in repetition and in different configurations to create a larger whole. The resulting structures are visually accessible graphic pieces that exist within a functioning workspace.

The Story:
A little over two weeks ago I received an email about an opportunity to display some artwork in a large, empty, newly re-built house in Bethesda, MD. I met with the real-estate agent who is the wife of one of my old high-school teachers from the Washington International School and she let me into the house. I was immediately inspired and excited about taking on the project as it fit perfectly with my mandate to take art out of the gallery and into less intimidating spaces. I took some photos and drove home to brainstorm…
I have been concerned with the idea of increasing the accessibility of art. Other important factors include determining the function and re-useability of the objects. In the past I have focused on sculptures, often using units in repetition to create them. These sculptures, though intriguing, had a low “shelf-life” due to the fact that they only existed as art when on display…when they weren’t on display they ceased being art and reverted to the objects and materials they were made from-which in short means objects in storage and later objects in the dump.
In times100, the main body of work is comprised of one-hundred 8″x8″ handmade wall panels which attempt to increase the functionality of the art piece by becoming visually stimulating objects that a viewer can easily identify with and can visualize owning, all while in the relatively neutral context of an empty home. They are designed to sell in order to become objects in peoples lives rather than obscure objects that serve little function.
Photos of the opening will follow next week.
Hope to see you at the opening on Friday, Oct. 17th, 2008!

Skateboards by akamundo! Check out this Funky “City Pattern Skateboard” at akamundo’s zazzle shop:

City Pattern Skateboard by akamundo
Triangles, squares, shapes in general in this urban abstract skateboard design. Bold black strokes over top color bursts including yellow, blue, and red. Lots of detail, fun to look at and discover and recall a city or urban scene. Also includes the akamundo signature across the middle.
There is a tendency is to obsess over detail and build a image over time but this design was created in under 15 minutes which represents a conscious effort to achieve a result without over-thinking an image. Simple strokes and colors elevate this skateboard design to a visually stimulating piece without the burden of an overly thought out or manipulated image.
Click here to see more view or Buy this skateboard. Board can be ordered as just a deck (grip tape included) or as a complete board. Completes are outfitted with premium components, including Independent Stage 10 trucks and Ricta Natural wheels on most decks. The narrow Mini 7 1/4” and the Old Skool Cruiser are outfitted with Krux 3.0 trucks and softer Ricta Cloud wheels for a smooth ride on any surface. The Old Skool 8 1/2” is also outfitted with Ricta Clouds. All completes are finished with Bullet bearings, grip tape and hardware.
akamundo Alphabet T-Shirt rated “Today’s Best” on Zazzle, Sept. 4, 2008
In reference to back to school season, check out this “Today’s Best” winner in akamundo’s online Zazzle Shop:
Design features a fun and colorful alphabet on a bubble background. Letters are modified by adding simple shapes that create faces and characters. A rainbow of colors is used in an ode to the back to school season which doubles as a funny t-shirt to wear out on a night on the town…ask the slightly more inebriated folk to say their alphabet really fast and see what happens!
This piece also reflects akamundo’s continued focus on basic elements, elements in series, and using objects and ideas that are easily accessible to the general public. In this case a base font is used and added to using only different colored circles to achieve the effect. A few simple gestures transform the otherwise mundane into a more exciting visual experience. Keep checking in to see more developments on this theme!
